Lincoln Public Schools - Third Grade Science Objectives

Embryology - The student will be able to:

• 3.1.1 explain the life cycle of a chicken.
• 3.1.2 identify and name the parts and functions of an egg.
• 3.1.3 describe a method for hatching chicken eggs.
• 3.1.4 observe and measure embryo development.
• 3.1.5 investigate other animals that lay eggs.

Energy - The student will be able to:

• 3.2.1 observe reflection and refraction of light.
• 3.2.2 demonstrate that heat may be produced in many ways.
• 3.2.3 demonstrate that heat can flow from one object to another by conduction.
• 3.2.4 demonstrate how sound is produced when objects vibrate.
• 3.2.5 change the pitch of sound by changing the rate of vibration.
• 3.2.6 use science tools such as: balance, thermometer, prism, and hand lens. (optional objective)

Dinosaurs and Fossils – The student will be able to:

• 3.3.1 understand the processes that created some fossils.
• 3.3.2 understand how scientists use fossil evidence to make inferences about dinosaur characteristics.
• 3.3.3 use scale drawings to make inferences about actual sizes of dinosaurs.
• 3.3.4 infer how dinosaurs lived by examining their characteristics.
• 3.3.5 create and interpret a binary classification key for selected dinosaurs.

Simple Machines – The student will be able to:

• 3.4.1 develop an understanding of the concepts of force and friction.
• 3.4.2 explore and understand the three classes of levers and explain how they make work easier.
• 3.4.3 explore and understand wheels and axles and discuss the ways they can help decrease force, increase distance, and decrease friction.
• 3.4.4 develop an understanding of how inclined planes make work easier.
• 3.4.5 explore and understand gear systems and explain how they make work easier.
